I was surprised to find that television of all things became a part of my New years celebration. I turned on our public tv coverage on Friday morning and there I was watching the people of Kiribati (a small atoll in the southpacific) singing a song to greet the sunrise on the new years day. The sun had recently risen in California and there is was coming up on the next day in another part of the world. Massimo and I sat on the couch with the atlas open and as the coverage moved around the world we would find that place on our atlas. Massimo was fascinated. From large spectacles in Taiwan ("That's where my teacher florence comes from" said Massimo) to dances of karma at an ancient temple in Indonesia. Le Tour Eiffel ablaze, candles in an ice palace in Lapland. It's an amazing globe we live on. Wonderful to see the many ways we celebrate.
